Chapter 18 - THE NAME ON THE PHONE For nine minutes, I believed Detective Reyes had betrayed us.

Nine minutes.
That was all it took for fear to return.
Then federal technicians cracked the phone.
The account had been created with stolen credentials.
The real sender was Deputy Commissioner Alan Price.
The man responsible for witness relocation.
The man who had leaked secure addresses.
Changed transport routes.
Helped Monica Shaw escape.
And arranged the murder of the guard who tried to stop Eleanor.
Alan was arrested at San Francisco International Airport.
He had cash.
False identification.
And a one-way ticket to Switzerland.
With his arrest, the final shield around the Caldwell family collapsed.
The trials lasted eleven months.
Eleanor received multiple life sentences without parole.
Charles received twenty-eight years.
Julian received nineteen.
Thomas Vale went to federal prison.
Monica Shaw was convicted.
Alan Price received life imprisonment.
Then came Adrian's trial.
I sat across from him.
For years, I had known every expression on his face.
The charming smile.
The wounded stare.
The cold anger.
Now none of them mattered.
The prosecutor asked me to describe the night of the attack.
I looked at Adrian.
“He believed the plate would teach me obedience.”
I touched the scar near my temple.
“Instead, it taught me the truth.”
The courtroom was silent.
“Love without respect isn't love.”
“It is ownership wearing a familiar face.”
Adrian lowered his head.
The judge sentenced him to decades in prison.
Before officers led him away, he looked at me.
“I did love you.”
I believed him.
But I no longer needed him to understand what love meant.
Three weeks later, my divorce became final.
I kept the condo.
May you like
Not because the court gave it to me.
Because it had always been mine.
