Chapter 1 - The Fall The scream came before Daniel Carter saw his son.

It cut through the marble foyer of the Carter mansion like a knife.
“Noah!”
Daniel had barely crossed the front door when his briefcase slipped from his hand and crashed against the polished floor.
At the bottom of the staircase, fifteen-month-old Noah lay crying.
Daniel ran.
He dropped to his knees and gathered his son into his arms, his heart hammering so violently he could barely breathe.
Then he looked up.
Margaret Carter stood at the top of the stairs.
Sixty-three years old.
Perfect burgundy dress.
Perfect pearls.
Not a trace of panic on her face.
Not a single movement toward the child.
Daniel's voice trembled.
“What happened?”
Margaret slowly descended.
“That bastard shouldn't be here.”
Daniel froze.
“What did you say?”
“He doesn't belong in this family.”
Something inside Daniel went silent.
For six months, he had allowed grief to make him weak.
Six months since Claire, his wife, had died suddenly, leaving behind a nine-month-old baby and a husband who no longer knew how to breathe without her.
For six months, Margaret had whispered doubts.
Noah doesn't look like you.
Claire had secrets.
Maybe the boy isn't yours.
Daniel had tried to ignore it.
But now his mother had kicked his son down a staircase.
Or so Daniel believed.
He stood with Noah pressed against his chest.
“You touched him.”
Margaret lifted her chin.
“He was crawling toward the stairs.”
“You touched my son.”
“He is not your son.”
Daniel's hand moved before his mind caught up.
The slap echoed across the foyer.
Margaret fell.
Her pearl necklace broke.
White pearls scattered across the marble like frozen tears.
She stared at her son.
“You hit your mother.”
Daniel's breathing shook.
“You kicked my child.”
Then he reached into his coat.
He pulled out a folded document.
Margaret saw the laboratory seal.
Her face changed.
“No.”
Daniel unfolded it.
DNA PATERNITY ANALYSIS.
Probability of Paternity:
99.9998%.
Alleged Father:
Daniel James Carter.
Child:
Noah James Carter.
Daniel dropped the paper beside her.
“You knew.”
Margaret's lips parted.
“You knew he was mine.”
She said nothing.
Daniel looked at his mother as if seeing her for the first time.
Then he asked the question that would destroy everything she had built.
“Why?”
Margaret's eyes moved toward the staircase.
Because the answer was never about Noah.
May you like
It was about what Noah would inherit.
And Daniel was about to discover that his baby boy stood between Margaret Carter and control of a fortune worth billions.
