Chapter 2 - Six Months Earlier Claire Carter died on an ordinary Tuesday.

That was what made it unbearable.
There had been no warning.
No dramatic goodbye.
No final conversation worthy of a movie.
One minute she was kissing Daniel goodbye.
Hours later, she was unconscious.
Before midnight, she was gone.
Noah was nine months old.
Daniel buried his wife while holding their son.
He remembered almost nothing about the funeral.
Except Margaret.
“You can come home now,” his mother whispered.
Home meant the Carter mansion in Greenwich.
Twenty thousand square feet of marble, glass, antique paintings, private security, servants and memories.
Daniel hated the place.
But he was exhausted.
So he returned.
At first Margaret became the mother he desperately needed.
She arranged meals.
Hired additional childcare.
Sat beside Noah's crib.
She told Daniel to sleep.
She told him to grieve.
Then the questions began.
“Did Claire ever tell you about the surgeon?”
Daniel looked up.
“She was a nurse.”
Margaret smiled.
“I know.”
A week later:
“Noah doesn't really resemble you.”
Daniel ignored her.
Another week:
“Some women hide things from their husbands.”
Daniel finally snapped.
“Stop talking about Claire like that.”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“I am only protecting you.”
But grief had already opened the door.
Margaret only had to keep pushing.
Then she produced a laboratory report.
It appeared to show Daniel was not Noah's biological father.
Daniel stared at it.
“This is fake.”
“You can believe that.”
“I do.”
Margaret sighed.
“You can love the boy without pretending.”
Daniel tore the paper apart.
“Noah is my son.”
But later that night, holding his sleeping baby, doubt entered the room.
Not because Daniel believed Margaret.
Because Claire wasn't alive to defend herself.
So Daniel secretly ordered a DNA test.

And Margaret discovered it.
That was when the war truly began.
