Chapter 4 - The Hospital Noah survived.

A concussion.

Bruising.

Terrifying crying.

But no broken bones.

Daniel sat beside the hospital bed holding his son's tiny hand.

For the first time in months, he allowed himself to breathe.

A detective arrived.

Maria Ramirez.

“Mr. Carter, I need your statement.”

Daniel told her everything.

Including the slap.

“I struck my mother.”

“Why?”

“She said my son deserved it.”

Ramirez studied him.

“You understand that hitting your mother was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“But you also believe she pushed your son?”

“I believe she did something.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

Daniel looked toward Noah.

“No. It isn't.”

Then Ramirez asked:

“Does the mansion have security cameras?”

“Yes.”

“Can we access them?”

Daniel hesitated.

“My mother controls the household system.”

Ramirez looked at him.

“Then we'll find another copy.”

Daniel remembered his father.

Henry had never trusted one security system.

Local recording.

Cloud archive.

Corporate mirror.

Daniel called Carter Global security.

The director went silent.

“Mr. Carter, your mother requested the residential archive be destroyed last month.”

“Was it?”

“No.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

His father had left him a weapon.
