Chapter 13 - The Sentence At sentencing, Margaret wore gray.

No pearls.

No burgundy.

No family members beside her.

The judge spoke quietly.

“You did not lose control once.”

Margaret looked down.

“You constructed a pattern of manipulation.”

Then came the sentence.

Prison.

Restitution.

Financial penalties.

Permanent removal from Carter fiduciary positions.

No contact with Noah.

As deputies approached, Margaret looked at Daniel.

“Tell Noah I loved him.”

Daniel's face remained still.

“No.”

Margaret flinched.

“When he is old enough, I'll tell him the truth.”

She stared at him.

Daniel continued:

“And I'll tell him something else.”

“What?”

“That people who love you can make mistakes.”

He paused.

“But they are never allowed to make you afraid and call that love.”

Margaret was led away.

Daniel watched the door close.

For the first time in years, the house was quiet.
