Chapter 11 - THE TEN FEET BETWEEN THEM Eleanor saw Julian enter the safe house.
Neither moved.
Ten feet separated them.
But the distance felt larger than their entire marriage.
“I was wrong,” Julian said.
Eleanor remained silent.
“I failed you.”
Nothing.
“I failed Leo.”
“Yes.”
That single word cut deeper than anger.
Julian swallowed.
“I believed fear instead of you.”
“You believed a stranger instead of your wife.”
“I know.”
“No. You know now.”
Leo cried from the next room.
Both parents turned instinctively.
For one brief second, they moved together.
Then stopped.
Eleanor looked at Julian.
“We save Leo.”
“And us?”
She stared at him.
“There is no ‘us’ until I know I can trust you when trusting me becomes difficult.”
Julian nodded.
“Fair.”
Eleanor walked toward Leo.
Behind her, Julian whispered:
“I’ll earn it.”

She did not answer.
But she did not tell him to leave.
