Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO SAVED THEM The first strike missed Eleanor’s throat by inches.

She crashed against the nursery cabinet.

Glass shattered.

Julian tried to rise.

His muscles refused.

Whatever Maria injected into him was working quickly.

“RUN!” he shouted.

Eleanor refused.

Maria lunged again.

Eleanor grabbed a brass lamp and swung.

The knife flew across the room.

Maria tackled her.

They hit the floor.

Then—

BANG.

Maria collapsed.

Eleanor stared.

Arthur Vale stood in the doorway.

Julian’s head of security.

His gun smoked.

For one second, relief flooded Eleanor’s body.

“Arthur. Thank God.”

Arthur closed the nursery door.

Click.

Locked.

Julian’s expression changed.

“Eleanor…”

She looked at him.

He was staring at Arthur.

Not with relief.

With horror.

Arthur raised the gun again.

This time toward Julian.

“Maria was never supposed to survive.”

Eleanor went cold.

May you like

Arthur smiled.

“Your brother sends his regards.”
