Chapter 22 - BENEATH MANHATTAN The archive smelled of dust, steel, and forgotten money.

Miles of paper records stretched underground.
Maria appeared between shelves.
Eleanor stared at her.
“You touched my child.”
Maria did not defend herself.
“I know.”
“You’re alive because I need information.”
“I know that too.”
Maria led them deeper.
“These records are Elias’s weakness. He trusted paper more than computers.”
Suddenly—
CLANG.
Steel doors slammed shut.
Red lights flashed.
Gas hissed from ceiling vents.
Maria’s face changed.
“This isn’t me.”
Julian raised his weapon.
“Convenient.”
Maria coughed.
“If I wanted you dead, I wouldn’t be breathing the same gas!”
Eleanor believed her.
Not because Maria deserved trust.
