They moved to a smaller house overlooking the California coast.
Leo learned to walk there.
His first steps were toward Eleanor.
His second were toward Julian.
Victoria survived and entered protective custody after testifying.
Thomas accepted a plea agreement.
Elias awaited trial.
Maria disappeared.
Sterling Global was restructured.
Much of the recovered money funded child-protection programs and families harmed by Elias’s network.
Julian stepped away from daily corporate control.
One evening, Eleanor entered the kitchen and smelled smoke.
“What are you doing?”
Julian looked at a ruined pan.
“Cooking.”
“That food has experienced violence.”
He laughed.
Leo threw peas from his high chair.
For once, Eleanor laughed too.
Julian looked around the modest kitchen.
“This feels strange.”
“What?”
“Peace.”
Eleanor leaned against him.
“Get used to it.”
That night there were no armed guards outside their bedroom.
No encrypted emergency phones on the nightstand.
No cameras pointed at Leo’s crib.
Julian took Eleanor’s hand.
“I spent my whole life building walls.”
“And?”
He looked toward their sleeping son.
“Turns out a home needs doors.”
Eleanor smiled.
Their family had survived.
