Chapter 1 - THE BOY WITH THE BLUE EYES The chandeliers of the Grand Metropolitan Hall glittered like captured stars.

Hundreds of crystal pendants hung from the ceiling, scattering golden light across polished marble floors. A string quartet played softly near the stage while wealthy donors in tuxedos and designer gowns drifted through the ballroom, laughing over champagne and discussing million-dollar investments.
At first glance, Sarah Carter looked completely out of place.
Her emerald-green dress was beautiful, but it had not come from a luxury boutique. She had bought it secondhand and spent three nights repairing the hem herself.
Still, when she walked through the enormous double doors holding her son's hand, she lifted her chin.
Tonight wasn't about money.
Tonight was about Owen.
Eight-year-old Owen Carter carefully adjusted the crutch beneath his arm.
His small navy-blue suit was slightly too big around the shoulders, but his bright blue eyes made him look almost regal.
And beneath one pant leg was the reason Sarah had spent the last year fighting harder than she had ever fought in her life.
A prosthetic leg.
Owen had lost his leg after a childhood illness had caused complications that doctors could not reverse. Months of physical therapy had followed. There had been painful mornings, sleepless nights, and moments when Owen had thrown his crutches across the room because he was tired of being different.
But tonight, he was walking.
Not perfectly.
Not quickly.
But proudly.
"Mom," Owen whispered, staring upward. "Look at those lights."
Sarah smiled.
"They're beautiful."
"They're bigger than our whole house."
She laughed softly.
"Maybe don't tell the landlord that."
Owen giggled.
For Sarah, that tiny laugh was worth more than every chandelier in the building.
She had worked two jobs to keep their little family afloat. Waitressing during the day. Cleaning offices late at night. There had been months when she had fallen asleep at the kitchen table with unpaid bills beneath her cheek.
But recently, something had finally changed.
A trust payment from Owen's late father had arrived.
Their mortgage was nearly under control.
For the first time in years, Sarah had allowed herself to imagine a future that didn't begin with the words How are we going to pay for this?
Owen spotted a table covered with cupcakes.
One cupcake had blue frosting.

"Mom?"
"I know that look."
"Can I?"
Sarah laughed.
"After we check our coats."
Owen nodded seriously.
"Deal."
Sarah led him toward the entrance hall.
She didn't know it yet, but within minutes, their lives were going to change forever.
