Chapter 9 - OWEN'S SECRET The following weeks were difficult.

Owen returned to school.
Some children asked questions.
Some stared.
A few whispered.
But Owen walked differently now.
He was still cautious.
Still learning.
Yet he carried Eleanor's medal in his backpack every day.
One afternoon, Sarah found him sitting alone in the backyard.
He was staring at his prosthetic leg.
"What's wrong?"
Owen shrugged.
"I don't want this one anymore."
Sarah sat beside him.
"Why?"
"Because it makes me different."
Sarah's heart tightened.
She took his hand.
"Different doesn't mean less."
"What if people laugh?"
"Then they don't deserve to stand beside you."
Owen looked down.
"Do you ever wish I was normal?"
Sarah immediately turned toward him.
"Never."
"Not even once?"
She pulled him into her arms.
"I wish the world were kinder to you."
She kissed his hair.
"But I would never wish you were someone else."
Owen cried quietly.
Then he whispered:
"I want to run."
Sarah smiled.
"Then let's find a way."
