But she refused to become obsessed with money.
She bought a modest home.

On the first morning there, Owen opened the back door.
He stared at the grass.
"Can I run?"
Sarah laughed.
"It's your backyard."
Owen ran.
His laughter filled the neighborhood.
Sarah stood in the doorway.
She thought about the old apartment.
The unpaid bills.
The hospital rooms.
The nights she had cried silently so Owen wouldn't hear.
Then she looked at him.
He was running.
Really running.
She whispered:
"We made it."
But Sarah didn't stop there.
She created a support group for parents raising children with physical disabilities.
She called it:
The Brave Steps Project.
At first, only six families joined.
Then twenty.
Then hundreds.
Sarah shared everything she had learned.
How to fight insurance companies.
How to find physical therapy.
How to speak up in schools.
How to teach children that their bodies were not something to apologize for.
Owen sometimes attended the meetings.
He became their unofficial mascot.
Whenever a frightened child asked whether life would always be difficult, Owen gave the same answer.
"No."
