Chapter 17 - THE RACE A year after the gala, Owen entered his first adaptive youth race.

Hundreds of people filled the stadium.

Sarah sat near the track.

Eleanor sat beside her.

The starting runners lined up.

Owen looked toward the stands.

He found his mother.

Sarah raised both hands.

"Just run!"

The starting signal sounded.

Owen moved.

For a few seconds, everything slowed.

His feet struck the track.

His breathing grew heavier.

One runner passed him.

Then another.

Owen stumbled.

The crowd gasped.

Sarah stood.

But Owen didn't fall.

He regained his balance.

And kept going.

He crossed the finish line.

He didn't win first place.

He finished fourth.

But when he looked toward Sarah, he smiled like he had won the Olympics.

She ran onto the field.

"You did it!"

"I finished!"

"Yes, you did."

Owen looked at the scoreboard.

"Fourth."

Sarah laughed.

"Fourth is pretty amazing."

He shook his head.

"Next year, I'm getting first."

Eleanor laughed.

"Now that's the Owen I know."

The crowd applauded.

And somewhere in that stadium, another child watched him.

A child who was afraid.

A child who needed proof.

May you like

Proof that different didn't mean defeated.

Owen became that proof.
