Chapter 8 - THE BILLIONAIRE FIGHTS BACK Richard Miller did not accept defeat.
His lawyers immediately attacked the case.
They claimed the incident had been exaggerated.
They argued that Richard had never intended to seriously injure Owen.
They questioned Sarah's actions.
The media circus intensified.
One television commentator asked:
"Did Sarah go too far when she slapped him?"
Sarah watched the broadcast from her living room.
She turned it off.
She didn't regret defending Owen.
But she was terrified.
Richard had money.
Power.
Lawyers.
Connections.
She had a modest house and two jobs.
That difference frightened her.
That evening, a black SUV stopped outside her home.
Sarah froze.
A man stepped out.
He wasn't Richard.
He was Richard's attorney.
He carried a briefcase.
"I'd like to discuss a settlement."
Sarah didn't invite him inside.
"What kind?"
"Mr. Miller is willing to compensate your family."
Sarah stared at him.
"For what?"
"The medical expenses."
"And in exchange?"
The lawyer paused.
"You withdraw your statement."
Sarah laughed bitterly.
"No."
"Mrs. Carter, think carefully."
"I already have."
"He can make this very difficult."
Sarah stepped closer.
"You should tell your client something."
"What?"
"He made one mistake."
The lawyer waited.
"He thought my fear was stronger than my love for my son."
Sarah closed the door.
Behind it, she leaned against the wall.
Her hands were shaking.
But she was smiling.
Because she knew something Richard didn't.
