Chapter 12 - THE FIRST RUN The new prosthetic was lightweight.

Black carbon fiber.
Designed for movement.
Designed for possibility.
Owen stood between two parallel bars.
His hands trembled.
Sarah stood several feet away.
"You can do it."
Owen took one step.
Then another.
The physical therapist watched carefully.
"Good."
Owen took another.
His body shifted.
His balance failed.
He fell.
Sarah's heart jumped.
But before she could run to him, Owen pushed himself up.
"I want to try again."
The therapist smiled.
"That's the spirit."
Again.
One step.
Two.
Three.
Then five.
Sarah covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
Owen was moving.
Not because anyone had promised him an easy life.
But because he had refused to let one cruel man define what his life could become.
Months passed.
The day finally arrived.
A sunny field.
A clear sky.
Owen stood at the starting line.
Sarah sat nearby.
Eleanor stood beside her.
"Ready?" the therapist called.
Owen nodded.
Then he ran.
At first, slowly.
Then faster.
His arms moved naturally.
His face transformed.
Fear disappeared.
Joy took its place.
Sarah stood.
"Owen!"
He ran toward her.
"I did it!"
She hugged him.
"You did."
Eleanor wiped a tear away.
"That boy isn't just running."
Sarah smiled.
May you like
"What's he doing?"
"He's outrunning everything that tried to stop him."
