Chapter 3 - A MOTHER'S RAGE Sarah heard her son's cry.

She knew that sound.
It wasn't ordinary crying.
It was fear.
She dropped her purse.
Her shoes struck the marble as she ran.
"Owen!"
The crowd parted.
Sarah fell to her knees beside him.
"Oh my God."
She touched his face.
"Baby, look at me."
Owen grabbed her dress.
"He hurt me."
Sarah's heart shattered.
"Where?"
"My back."
She checked his arms.
His shoulders.
His prosthetic.
Nothing looked broken.
But he was trembling.
Sarah pulled him into her arms.
"It's okay. Mommy's here."
Then she looked up.
Richard stood only a few feet away.
He had already turned toward his phone.
As though none of it mattered.
Sarah slowly stood.
"Did you do this?"
Richard looked at her.
"Excuse me?"
"My son."
"He tripped."
Owen cried harder.
"No! He pushed me!"
Richard's expression hardened.
"Watch your mouth, boy."
Sarah stepped between them.
"You will not speak to my son like that."
Richard laughed.
"You people always make everything dramatic."
Sarah stared at him.
"You kicked his crutch."
"I moved it."
"You pushed him."
"He was blocking my path."
"He is eight years old."
Richard shrugged.
"And?"
The word struck Sarah harder than a slap.
And?
She looked at her son's trembling hands.
She remembered hospital rooms.
She remembered teaching Owen to stand again.
She remembered the first time he had taken three steps with his new prosthetic.
She remembered him crying into her shoulder because children at school had called him names.
And now, in one of the richest rooms in the city, a grown man had knocked him to the floor simply because he found him inconvenient.
Sarah's voice became quiet.
"Apologize."
Richard smiled.
"You're making a mistake."
"Apologize to my son."
"Or what?"
Sarah took one step forward.
"I call the police."
Richard laughed.
"Go ahead."
He leaned closer.
"You have no idea who you're dealing with."
Sarah looked directly into his eyes.
"No."
She pointed toward Owen.
"But I know exactly who I'm protecting."
May you like
The room became silent.
And everyone felt the temperature change.
