Chapter 13 - THE VERDICT The verdict came six months after the gala.
Richard was found guilty of assault and child endangerment.
The judge also ordered substantial financial penalties and restitution.
Richard sat motionless.
The courtroom was silent.
The judge looked at him.
"Money does not place a person above the law."
Richard's eyes lowered.
"For too long, you believed power protected you from consequences."
He was sentenced to community service, fines, and additional legal restrictions.
His position as CEO was gone.
His reputation was gone.
His empire was severely damaged.
But Sarah didn't celebrate.
She simply hugged Owen.
They had never wanted revenge.
They had wanted justice.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded them.
One asked Sarah:
"Do you feel like you won?"
Sarah looked at Owen.
Then shook her head.
"This isn't about winning."
She held his hand.
"It's about making sure another child doesn't have to wonder whether the world will protect him."
The reporter asked Owen:
"What do you want people to remember?"
Owen thought for a moment.
Then smiled.
"Don't judge people by what they can't do."
He lifted his chin.
"Look at what they can become."
The crowd applauded.
Sarah kissed his forehead.
