Chapter 11 - Marcus Hale Marcus looked twenty years older.

"You want the truth?"
I placed Claire's death certificate on his blanket.
"Everything."
He closed his eyes.
"Claire was alive for thirty-six hours after the fall."
My chest tightened.
"You kept her at the lake house."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Elliot said the hospital would expose everything."
"And you listened."
Marcus began crying.
"I told myself I was protecting my career."
"You murdered my sister."
"I didn't hit her."
"You watched her die."
He couldn't answer.
Then he confessed.
Claire needed emergency surgery.
Instead, Marcus administered medication to keep her quiet.
When Ruiz asked what medication, Marcus whispered:
"Morphine."
Noah was not there.
Thank God.
Then the lights went out.
A figure appeared in the doorway.
Surgical mask.
Gun.
Ruiz fired.
The attacker ran.
I followed.
Down the stairwell.
Across the parking garage.
He jumped into a delivery van.
Before he escaped, his mask slipped.
I saw his face.
Elliot Price.
Our CFO.
The man who had signed millions of dollars in fraudulent transactions.
The man who had just tried to kill the only doctor who could testify against him.
Ruiz looked at me.
"Now we know who's cleaning up."
But she was wrong.
