Chapter 5 - The Blue Sedan Marcus Hale answered on the second ring.

"Daniel."

"You know Claire is dead?"

Silence.

Not shock.

Not confusion.

Silence.

Then:

"Who told you that?"

"Your signature did."

Another pause.

"Come to my clinic tomorrow."

"Why?"

"Because if you want the truth, you need to hear it from me."

"Where?"

"Underground parking."

"Alone?"

"Yes."

The line went dead.

Ruiz stared at me.

"You're not going."

I went anyway.

Not alone.

Ruiz followed two minutes behind.

But someone else followed us too.

The blue sedan.

It stayed behind us for six miles.

Then it accelerated.

The sedan slammed into our vehicle.

Metal screamed.

Ruiz fought the wheel.

The attacker disappeared into traffic.

We found the car twenty minutes later.

Abandoned.

Stolen plates.

Wiped interior.

But someone had left something behind.

A hospital visitor badge.

MARCUS HALE MEDICAL CENTER.

Back home, Noah examined Claire's compass.

He found a hairline seam.

We opened it.

A microSD card was hidden inside.

I inserted it into my laptop.

One audio file.

June 14.

9:47 p.m.

Claire's voice filled the kitchen.

"Vanessa, get away from me."

Vanessa answered.

"Give me the drive, Claire."

Then another voice.

Marcus Hale.

"Lock the door."

Noah looked at me.

And for the first time, I realized the woman who had supposedly abandoned him had been fighting to survive.
