Chapter 21 - The Empty House Six months passed.

The Carter mansion felt different.

Not peaceful.

Not yet.

But honest.

Vanessa had pleaded guilty.

Marcus had confessed.

Elliot was preparing for trial.

Carter Meridian was under independent oversight.

Noah's inheritance was protected.

My mother had good days and bad days.

On the good days, she remembered Claire.

On the bad days, she called me by my father's name.

Sometimes she asked when Claire was coming home.

Those were the hardest moments.

I never lied.

I simply said:

"She's with us."

One rainy evening, Noah found me in my office.

He held the old cane.

"Dad's?"

"Yes."

"I don't want it."

"Why?"

"Because that's the last thing Mom touched before she died."

I understood.

We put the cane into a box.

Then Noah noticed something.

"Uncle Dan."

"What?"

He pointed at the bottom of the cane.

There was a small metal cap.

It had never been there before.

We unscrewed it.

Inside was a tiny folded piece of paper.

Claire's handwriting.

One sentence.

If you found this, the first story is over.

I stared at Noah.

He stared back.

"What does that mean?"

May you like

I didn't know.

And that frightened me more than anything.
