Chapter 12 - The Hidden Archive Back at home, Noah remembered something.

"Mom used to hide my birthday money in books."

"What books?"

"She called it the map."

We searched Claire's apartment.

One book was different.

A huge red world atlas.

Inside, someone had cut a section from the pages.

A black flash drive was hidden there.

The label said:

THIRTEEN MONTHS.

The password was a question Claire used to ask Noah.

"What do you do when you're lost?"

Noah smiled through tears.

"Find north."

The drive opened.

Bank records.

Shell companies.

Internal communications.

Photographs.

And thirteen folders.

One for every month since Claire vanished.

The final folder contained a video.

Claire appeared on screen.

Alive.

Smiling.

"Hi, bug."

Noah stopped breathing.

She talked directly to him.

"If you're watching this, something went wrong."

She explained the entire scheme.

The fake signatures.

The shell companies.

The stolen money.

The medical records.

Then she held up a small black security token.

"This is the real proof."

She smiled.

"I hid it where Vanessa would never look."

Noah stared at the screen.

"Where?"

Claire continued.

"With someone she thinks Daniel doesn't trust anymore."

My blood went cold.

Our mother.

Evelyn.

I called the memory-care facility.

A nurse answered.

"Mr. Carter, your wife picked your mother up an hour ago."

I couldn't breathe.

"Vanessa?"

"Yes."

I looked at Ruiz.

Vanessa had my mother.

And she had taken her for one reason.

The proxy token.
