Chapter 29 - Claire's Memorial One year after the investigation ended, we returned to the lake.

We held a proper memorial for Claire.
My mother sat beside Noah.
Lily carried yellow flowers.
Thomas Reed came quietly.
Elena stood in the back.
Nobody gave a long speech.
Noah simply stepped forward.
"My mom didn't get to come home."
He looked toward the water.
"But she never stopped trying."
He placed the compass beside the urn.
Then he turned toward me.
"I think she'd want us to go home."
I smiled through tears.
"Yeah."
We stood together.
The lake was calm.
For thirteen months, I had lived inside a storm.
Now the silence felt different.
It didn't feel empty.
It felt earned.
That evening, Noah and I sat on the dock.
"Do you think Mom knew she'd die?"
"Maybe."
"Was she afraid?"
I thought about Claire's final video.
"Probably."
"Then why did she keep going?"
I looked at him.
"Because she loved you more than she feared anything else."
Noah leaned against my shoulder.
We watched the sun disappear behind the trees.
Then my phone buzzed.
One message.
Unknown sender.
There was no text.
Only a photograph.
A photograph of Claire.
Alive.
Standing beside a woman I had never seen before.
The timestamp was dated three weeks before her death.
On the back was a handwritten message:
You found the wrong ending.
I stared at it.
Noah looked over.
"What is it?"
I didn't answer.
May you like
Because I knew one thing.
The story wasn't over.
