My father had built Carter Meridian using money connected to an offshore medical network.
Elena Cole had helped him.
When she tried to leave, she disappeared.
My father told everyone she had died.
But Claire found evidence she had survived.
"Why didn't she tell you?" I asked.
Thomas looked at me.
"Because she wasn't sure you would believe her."
The words hurt.
Again.
I had become the man Claire couldn't trust with the truth.
Noah looked at the photograph.
"Is that Mom?"
"Yes."
"Who took it?"
Thomas hesitated.
"Elena."
My heart stopped.
"That picture was taken after Claire was born."
"Where?"
"A hospital in another state."
"Why?"
Thomas looked toward the window.
"Because your father wasn't Claire's only secret."
The room became silent.
Then a car stopped outside.
Thomas stood.
"We need to leave."
"Why?"
"Because if someone knows you found me, they're already coming."
A black SUV appeared at the end of the street.
Thomas grabbed a coat.
Noah took the photographs.
We ran through the back door.
Behind us, the front window shattered.
