Chapter 20 - The Boardroom The boardroom was filled with people who had spent thirteen months pretending Claire didn't exist.
Elliot's allies attacked first.
They called the evidence incomplete.
They questioned the death certificate.
They questioned my judgment.
They questioned Noah's inheritance.
Then Noah stood.
"My mom has been dead for thirteen months."
Nobody moved.
"Some of you signed papers pretending she was alive because it made you money."
He looked around the room.
"If you need more time to decide whether that's wrong, you shouldn't be running this company."
Silence.
Susan presented the proxy logs.
Forensic accountants presented the financial records.
The fraudulent sale collapsed.
Elliot's voting allies lost control.
The board removed Elliot.
An independent investigation began.
When we walked outside, reporters surrounded us.
A microphone reached Noah.
"What do you want people to remember about your mother?"
Noah looked at me.
Then at the cameras.
"Her name."
He swallowed.
"Claire Carter."
The reporters went silent.
"My mom didn't disappear."
"People made her disappear."
He looked straight into the cameras.
