Chapter 27 - The Door Claire Left Open The caller was Elena Cole.

She agreed to meet.
Noah came with me.
We met at sunrise near the ocean.
Elena looked at Noah for a long time.
Then she cried.
"You have your mother's eyes."
Noah stepped forward.
"You knew her?"
"Better than anyone."
Elena told us Claire had found her two years before her disappearance.
Claire wanted answers.
Elena wanted Claire to walk away.
But Claire refused.
"She said you were the only person who could explain my father's secrets."
Elena nodded.
"Your father wasn't a monster when I met him."
"What happened?"
"Power."
She looked toward the ocean.
"Power changes what people are willing to justify."
Then she gave Noah a small wooden box.
Inside was Claire's original compass.
The one everyone thought had been destroyed.
Noah opened it.
There was another memory card inside.
Claire had prepared one final recording.
Not for Daniel.
For Noah.
The video showed Claire smiling.
"If you're watching this, bug, you're old enough to know everything."
Noah cried before she even finished the first sentence.
Claire told him she loved him.
That she was proud of him.
That his life should never be defined by what happened to her.
Then she looked directly into the camera.
"And if Uncle Daniel is there..."
She smiled.
"Don't let him spend the rest of his life feeling guilty."
I looked down.
For the first time since Claire died, I felt something other than grief.
