"What are you doing here?"
"Grandma texted me."
"You should've stayed outside."
"I wasn't leaving her."
Smoke crawled across the ceiling.
Then we heard Vanessa.
She was trapped beneath a fallen metal rack.
The green handbag was several feet away.
I looked at her.
She looked back.
For one second, I imagined walking away.
Leaving her to face the consequences.
Then Noah said:
"Mom wouldn't want us to."
We lifted the rack.
Vanessa crawled free.
Before she could stand, Elliot appeared through the smoke.
Gun in hand.
"You ruined everything," he told Vanessa.
She stared at him.
"You tried to kill me."
"You became a liability."
Elliot raised the gun.
Noah kicked a metal pipe across the floor.
Elliot looked down.
I hit him.
The gun fired.
Ruiz stormed through the side door.
"Elliot Price! Drop the weapon!"
He reached for it.
Ruiz kicked it away.
Handcuffs snapped around his wrists.
Vanessa collapsed against a wall.
The fire department extinguished the flames.
But the proxy token was gone.
Vanessa looked at Noah.
"Ask him what his mother gave him."
Noah looked confused.
