Ruiz brought a tactical team.
I went first.
Vanessa stood beside the SUV.
Mom was inside.
"Bag on the ground."
"Let her go."
"You know that's not how this works."
I put the bag down.
Mom stepped out.
She looked at me.
For a moment, she didn't recognize me.
Then she smiled.
"Robert?"
My father's name.
It broke something inside me.
Vanessa grabbed the handbag.
Mom suddenly became alert.
"That's Claire's."
Vanessa froze.
"You took my girl."
Then a gunshot cracked.
The SUV's rear window exploded.
Vanessa screamed.
"Elliot!"
So Elliot was there.
And he had not planned to let either of us leave.
Ruiz's team moved in.
Vanessa ran.
I chased her into the warehouse.
Then the steel door slammed shut.
A lock clicked.
Smoke began filling the building.
