Chapter 19 - Noah's TruthI found Noah sitting on the stairs.
"Was Mom mad at you?"
"Yes."
He smiled.
"She could stay mad a long time."
"World-class."
He laughed.
Then the laughter disappeared.
"Did she leave me?"
"No."
I knelt in front of him.
"Your mom did not leave you."
He looked at me.
"She was trying to get back."
He finally broke.
I held him.
For thirteen months, Noah had carried questions no child should have carried.
Why did his mother disappear?
Why did she stop calling?
Why did everyone tell him to move on?
Now he knew.
She had never abandoned him.
She had fought for him until she couldn't fight anymore.
The next morning, Susan called.
"The board is trying to remove you."
"Why?"
"They want Elliot's people to control the voting structure before Claire's shares transfer to Noah."
I stared at the lake outside the window.
Even dead, Claire was still dangerous to the people who had betrayed her.
And even after everything they had done, they were still trying to steal from her son.
I hung up.
Then I looked at Noah.
"Want to go to a board meeting?"
He nodded.

"Mom would."
"Exactly."
