Chapter 10 - THE MAN IN GRAY
They reached Rachel's house in nine minutes.
The patrol officer had been lured outside by a false report. A kitchen window was broken. Drawers had been dumped across the floor.
Noah had hidden Lily in a closet before leaving for the lake house. She stayed silent while the intruder searched the room and repeated one question: “Where is the card?”
She remembered a gray jacket and a scar across his thumb.
Claire's compass had been taken from the evidence bag left in the locked bedroom. In its place lay Elliot Price's business card.
On the back, someone had written:
STOP BEFORE YOUR CHILDREN PAY.
“Elliot wants us to blame him,” Ruiz said.
Daniel stared at her. “Why would he?”
“Maybe he didn't leave the card.”
Security footage showed the intruder leaving through the alley. For a single frame, his face turned toward the camera.
It was not Elliot.

It was a man Daniel recognized from his father's funeral—a former Carter Meridian security chief named Owen Voss.
Voss had supposedly died two years ago.
