Chapter 11 - A DEAD MAN'S PAYROLL
Carter Meridian records listed Owen Voss as deceased, yet payroll transfers had continued to a consulting company in Nevada.
Claire had flagged every payment.
Susan Bell, the Carter family attorney, arrived with documents Claire had signed six weeks before disappearing. Her face tightened when Daniel mentioned Voss.
“Your father used him for problems that could not appear on company paper,” she said.
“What kind of problems?”
“The kind your father paid me not to ask about.”
Susan revealed that if Claire died before Noah turned eighteen, her voting shares transferred into a trust for him. Combined with Daniel's shares, they created a controlling block.
“Then why hasn't the transfer happened?” Daniel asked.
“Because legally Claire is not dead. That certificate was never filed.”
Somebody had designed a woman who was dead when silence was useful and alive whenever her signature was needed.
Susan slid another file across the table.
Claire's digital identity had approved eleven transactions after June 14. The largest was the seventy-million-dollar sale of a subsidiary to a shell company connected to Vanessa.
