Chapter 17 - PIER NINE
Wind screamed through the rusted steel ribs of Pier Nine.
Vanessa stood beside the SUV. Evelyn was inside, unharmed but confused.
“Drive on the ground,” Vanessa ordered.
“Mother first.”
Evelyn stepped out slowly. For one heartbreaking instant, she mistook Daniel for his father.
Then she saw Vanessa and became startlingly clear.
“You took my girl,” she said.
A rifle cracked. The SUV's rear window exploded.
Ruiz's team moved. Daniel pulled Evelyn behind concrete as Vanessa shouted toward the warehouse, “Voss, you were supposed to wait!”
Elliot appeared on a catwalk with a pistol. He had come for the drive. Voss fired from somewhere unseen.
Three conspirators, each convinced the others had betrayed them.
Vanessa ran into the warehouse with the green handbag. Noah slipped from police cover and followed.

Then smoke began pouring from the roof.
