Chapter 14 - MARA COLE

Mara Cole had been thirty-eight, homeless, and treated twice at Hale's clinic. Three days after Claire's injury, her body was privately cremated under Claire's case number.

The crematorium director remembered Hale delivering the sealed remains. Vanessa collected the ashes.

“She cried the whole time,” he said.

“Did she say where she was taking them?”

“Only that the dead deserved their real names.”

The ledger contained Vanessa's signature and one other: Owen Voss.

Ruiz received word that Hale had survived surgery. Daniel found him guarded in intensive care.

“Claire survived the fall,” Hale whispered. “She escaped the room once. Voss brought her back.”

“How long did she live?”

“Long enough to forgive you.”

Daniel leaned close. “You don't get to speak for her.”

The lights died.

A masked man rushed through the door. Ruiz fired, forcing him into the stairwell. Daniel followed far enough to see the mask slip.

The face beneath it belonged to Elliot Price.

But the hand gripping the rail had no scar.

Elliot was not the man who had entered Rachel's house.

There were still two hunters.
