Chapter 36 - THE HOUSE WITH OPEN DOORS
One year after the warehouse fire, the lake-house legal center opened.
Its walls were bright now. The hidden boiler room had been transformed into a records archive with a glass door—nothing concealed, everything catalogued.
Daniel named it The Claire Project.
At the opening, workers' families, reporters, lawyers, and company employees filled the lawn. Samuel Ortiz cut the ribbon.
Noah unveiled a plaque:
TRUTH NEEDS A WITNESS. COURAGE MAKES ONE.
Ruiz arrived late, carrying coffee. “No secret tunnels?” she asked.
“All sealed.”
“Disappointing.”
For the first time, Daniel noticed how easily she made him smile.
Across the lawn, Lily taught Evelyn to blow soap bubbles. Noah photographed them with Claire's old camera.
