Chapter 33 - THE LETTER FOR NOAH
They opened the letter at home with Lily asleep between them on the couch.
Claire wrote about ordinary things first: Noah's hatred of peas, his habit of reading endings before beginnings, the scar on his knee from learning to ride a bicycle.
Then the tone changed.
There is a difference between inheritance and destiny. You may inherit our name, our money, and our mistakes. You do not owe any of them your life.
She told Noah to choose who he became before the company chose for him.
At the bottom she had drawn the same lighthouse from his birthday card.
Beneath it: The safest harbor is not always home.
Noah folded the letter carefully. “She knew I might not want the company.”
Daniel smiled. “She knew you.”
For the first time, Noah spoke about becoming an investigative journalist.
“That sounds dangerous,” Daniel said.
