Healing did not make the house forget.
Lily sometimes set a place for Vanessa at dinner. Noah still woke when cars slowed outside. Daniel checked locked doors twice and hated himself for needing to.
Ruiz recommended a family counselor named Dr. Lena Brooks. In her office, Daniel finally said the sentence he had avoided.
“I failed Claire.”
Noah looked at him. “You failed her once.”
Daniel flinched.
“But you didn't keep failing her.”
That distinction became the first solid ground beneath his grief.
They began rebuilding through small rituals: pancakes on Sundays, movies Claire loved, one honest conversation each week where nobody was allowed to say “I'm fine.”
Lily stopped setting the extra plate.
