Chapter 40 - THE LIGHT BEYOND THE LAKE

Dawn found the family on the dock.

Evelyn could not explain everything. Memory came to her in broken windows: a train station, Robert shouting, Claire hiding documents, David promising to protect Noah. But one truth remained intact.

“David did not drown,” she said. “Claire helped him disappear after he learned what Robert had done.”

Noah stood very still. Hope frightened him more than grief. Grief was familiar. Hope could betray him.

Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder. “We do this differently now. No assumptions. No comfortable lies. We follow evidence.”

Ruiz arrived carrying the recovered trust file. She confirmed a recent withdrawal from an account untouched for sixteen years.

It had been made three days earlier in Portland, Maine.

The security image was blurred, but the man at the counter wore Claire's silver compass around his neck.

Noah breathed, “Dad.”

Daniel did not promise him it was true. He promised something better.

“We will find out together.”

Behind them, Lily laughed as the first sun broke over Blackwater Lake. Evelyn took her hand. The house windows burned gold, no longer watching like dark eyes.

Daniel held Robert's note above the water, then folded it and placed it in his pocket. He had learned that destroying a secret was not the same as defeating it.

Across the lake, a small boat moved through the morning mist.

A lone man stood at the wheel.
