Chapter 28 - BLACK WATER
A gun fired.
Daniel struck Voss as Noah crawled toward the door. The rotten boards broke beneath all three men.
They plunged into the freezing lake.
Voss caught Noah's ankle. Daniel drove into him, tearing the boy free. Above the water, Ruiz shouted from the dock.
Daniel pushed Noah toward a rescue line. Voss surfaced several yards away, still clutching the evidence bag.
For one moment, escape lay open before him.
Then the ice-thin current pulled him beneath the dock. He released the bag to save himself. Officers dragged him from the water and closed handcuffs around his wrists.
In the ambulance, Noah shook under heated blankets.
“I thought the message was from Mom,” he said.
Daniel held his wet head against his chest. “Wanting her back does not make you foolish.”
“I almost got us killed.”
“And I once ignored her because I was afraid. We survive, then we learn.”

This one had sound.
