Chapter 32 - CLAIRE CARTER DAY
Carter Meridian emerged smaller, stripped of hidden accounts and private favors. Daniel sold the divisions built on corruption and converted the lake house into a legal-aid center for whistleblowers.
The board created an annual day in Claire's name.
Daniel hated the polished banners. Noah did too.
At the first ceremony, Noah ignored the prepared speech.
“My mother was not fearless,” he told the employees. “Fearless people are rare. Brave people are everywhere. They are the ones who are scared and still tell the truth.”
Afterward, an elderly factory worker named Samuel Ortiz approached Daniel. He had survived the accident Robert covered up.
“Your sister visited me before she disappeared,” he said. “She promised to bring every name into the light.”
He handed Daniel a sealed letter Claire had left with him.
