Chapter 14 - The Woman in the Photograph The envelope contained an old photograph.

It showed Arthur standing beside a woman I had never seen.
She was holding a little girl.
The girl looked familiar.
Too familiar.
I turned the photograph over.
There was a date.
Twenty-two years earlier.
And three words.
Trust your mother.
My hands went cold.
My mother had died when I was sixteen.
She had never mentioned the Sterlings.
Never mentioned Arthur.
Never mentioned Eleanor.
I called my father's old attorney.
He answered on the second ring.
When I gave him the date, there was a long silence.
Then he said:
“Serena, there are things your mother begged me never to tell you.”
I swallowed.
“What things?”
May you like
His voice dropped.
“Your mother once worked for Eleanor Sterling.”
