Chapter 16 - The Son Who Didn't Know Daniel read the letter.

His face went blank.

“I was seventeen.”

“I know.”

“I didn't know what she was doing.”

My anger softened for one terrible second.

“What did you do?”

He looked ashamed.

“Mother told me your mother was stealing from us.”

“And you believed her?”

“I was a kid.”

“You were seventeen.”

He looked at me.

“I gave Mother the key to your mother's office.”

I stared at him.

That key had apparently been used to steal the financial records Grace had collected.

Daniel had unknowingly helped Eleanor destroy the evidence.

He had carried that guilt for years.

And he had never remembered my mother's name.

Until now.

Then Daniel whispered:

“That's why Mother hated you.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because she knew exactly who you were.”
