Chapter 6 - Eleanor Sterling Eleanor entered the library without knocking.

She was sixty-eight years old and carried herself like someone who had never heard the word no.
Her silver hair was perfectly arranged.
Her black gown was immaculate.
And her eyes were cold enough to freeze the room.
She looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
“What's going on?”
Nobody answered.
Eleanor walked toward the desk.
Her gaze landed on the photographs.
For the first time, something flickered in her expression.
Fear.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
She picked up the photograph of Arthur's crash.
“Where did you get this?”
“That doesn't matter.”
“It matters very much.”
I stepped closer.
“Your son was nearly killed.”
Eleanor's jaw tightened.
“Arthur is alive.”
“In a coma.”
“He will recover.”
“You sound very certain.”
Her eyes met mine.
“I always am.”
Then she looked at Daniel.
“You brought this woman into our family.”
Daniel whispered:
“Mother…”
Eleanor turned toward him.
“And now she's destroying it.”
I smiled sadly.
“No, Mrs. Sterling.”

I picked up my bag.
“I'm finally showing everyone what was already broken.”
