Chapter 2 - SecurityThe door suddenly opened.

Maya entered first.
Behind her was Evelyn Grant, executive director of the Sterling Civic Foundation.
Both women froze.
Maya stared at my ruined gown.
Then my hair.
Then Camille.
Then Daniel.
“What happened?”
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“It was a misunderstanding.”
“No.”
My voice came out calmer than I expected.
Everyone looked at me.
I pointed toward Camille.
“Daniel's guest assaulted me.”
The hallway went silent.
Camille's smile disappeared.
“She was provoking me.”
“You grabbed my hair.”
“You pushed me first!”
“I never touched you.”
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Serena, please.”
That word again.
Please.
The word he used whenever he wanted me to stop asking questions.
Evelyn's expression hardened.
“Security.”
Two guards appeared almost immediately.
Camille's face went white.
But before they could reach her, she screamed.
“You don't understand! She's lying!”
Then she looked directly at Daniel.
“Tell them what she did to your brother!”
Daniel went completely still.
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
“Your brother?”
Camille realized she had said too much.
But it was already too late.
Evelyn looked at me.
“What brother?”
Daniel whispered, “Camille, stop.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Why? You're going to keep pretending?”
The room seemed to shrink around us.
May you like
Then Camille dropped the sentence that changed everything.
“Arthur didn't have an accident.”
