Chapter 22 - The Final Confrontation Richard Vance returned that night.

He entered the house without making a sound.
“You have your mother's eyes.”
I turned.
He stood in the doorway.
Older.
Calmer.
Terrifying.
“You killed my mother.”
“No.”
“You destroyed her life.”
“Yes.”
I raised the ledger.
“This is what you wanted.”
He smiled.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“You think the police will save you?”
“No.”
I looked toward the window.
Daniel stood outside with federal agents.
Richard turned.
His expression changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Daniel entered.
“You're not taking her.”
Richard laughed.
“You finally grew a spine.”

Daniel answered:
“I finally realized who I was supposed to protect.”
