He looked different now.
No confidence.
No irritation.

I didn't look at him.
Evelyn spoke first.
“Did you know Arthur's crash wasn't accidental?”
Daniel said nothing.
“Answer me.”
He closed his eyes.
“I suspected.”
I laughed.
It wasn't a happy sound.
“You suspected?”
“I didn't know.”
“You knew enough to lie.”
He looked at me.
“Serena, I was trying to protect my family.”
“No.”
I stood.
“You were protecting yourself.”
Daniel's face tightened.
“You don't understand what my mother is capable of.”
That sentence stopped me.
His mother.
Eleanor Sterling.
The woman who controlled the foundation.
The woman who controlled the Sterling empire.
The woman who had built a reputation for turning scandals into disappearances.
I slowly asked:
“What does your mother have to do with Arthur?”
Daniel didn't answer.
