Chapter 30 - The Letter Nobody Expected Six months after our wedding, I received a letter.

There was no return address.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed my mother standing beside Arthur twenty-two years earlier.
But that wasn't the shocking part.
Behind them stood a little boy.
Daniel.
I stared at the photograph.
On the back, someone had written:
Grace didn't tell you everything.
Below that was another sentence.
Richard Vance was not the only person who survived that night.
My heart began to race.
Daniel walked into the room.
“What is it?”
I turned the photograph toward him.
His smile disappeared.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he looked at me.
“Serena…”
I folded the letter.
“We've spent years uncovering everyone else's secrets.”
I looked toward the dark window.
“Maybe it's time we find out what our parents were hiding from us.”
Outside, thunder rolled across the city.
Daniel took my hand.
This time, neither of us let go.
Because our story had finally become something neither Eleanor, nor Richard, nor anyone else could control.
We had survived betrayal.
We had survived fear.
We had survived the truth.
And perhaps the strangest part was this:
Sometimes the end of one mystery is nothing more than the beginning of another.
I looked once more at my mother's photograph.

And for the first time in years, I wasn't afraid of what came next.
I was ready.
