Chapter 17 - The Marriage Our wedding had not been a coincidence.

Eleanor had approved it.

She knew who I was.

She wanted me inside the family where she could monitor me.

Daniel had thought he was choosing me.

He hadn't.

We had both been manipulated.

But that didn't erase what he had done.

The affair.

The lies.

The humiliation.

The silence.

I told him:

“I loved you.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“No. You don't.”

I stepped closer.

“I built a life with you while you were protecting people who were destroying mine.”

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

I took off my wedding ring.

He stared at it.

“I don't know if I can forgive you.”

Daniel nodded.

“You shouldn't have to.”

May you like

I placed the ring on the table.

For the first time, he didn't ask me to stay.
