Chapter 1 - THE CAMERA NEVER BLINKED The security footage froze on Vanessa Lang's hand disappearing into my handbag.

For one terrible second, nobody breathed.

Then Harrington House erupted.

Whispers rippled through the ballroom. Someone cursed beneath his breath. A woman near the staircase covered her mouth. Margaret Harrington stood beside the shattered evening calm, clutching the empty velvet jewelry box as though it were the only thing holding her upright.

On the screen, the footage continued.

Vanessa looked around.

Then she slipped the Harrington Star necklace into my bag.

My hand went instinctively to my burning cheek.

She had slapped me only minutes earlier.

She had screamed that I had stolen the necklace.

She had called me a thief in front of forty people.

Now the camera had told a different story.

Daniel Harrington stepped between Vanessa and me.

His expression had gone frighteningly calm.

“You planted it.”

Vanessa stared at the screen.

“That video is wrong.”

“The timestamp is wrong.”

“Someone altered it.”

Daniel pointed toward the ceiling.

“The system records to three separate servers.”

Vanessa's face drained of color.

Then she looked at me.

Not with anger.

With fear.

I realized something then.

The necklace had never been the real weapon.

I was.

“Why me?” I asked.

Vanessa said nothing.

“You walked past six unattended purses.”

Still nothing.

“You chose mine.”

Her lips trembled.

“And you accused me before anyone searched the room.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“That necklace belonged to my mother.”

Her voice cracked.

“It has been in this family for nearly eighty years.”

Then I felt something cold against my chest.

The little silver locket my adoptive mother had left me.

I pulled it from beneath my housekeeping uniform.

Margaret stared at the photograph inside.

Her face became completely white.

“That woman…”

She took a step closer.

“That woman was my daughter.”

The room fell silent again.

I swallowed.

“Her name?”

Margaret looked directly into my eyes.

“Claire.”

She touched the edge of the photograph without touching me.

“Claire Harrington.”

May you like

Then she whispered the words that shattered everything I thought I knew about myself.

“She has been dead for twenty-four years.”
