Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN IN ROOM 317 Smoke swallowed the warehouse.

We moved into the tunnel.
Claire leaned against me.
She was lighter than I expected.
Fragile.
But alive.
The passage smelled of salt and stone.
Water rushed around our ankles.
Behind us, Victor tried to escape.
Reyes and Daniel pursued him.
At the dock, harbor patrol waited.
Claire looked at me.
“I left you with Ruth.”
“She raised me.”
“She loved you.”
Claire began crying.
“She was my nurse at Silver Pines.”
I remembered Ruth's old stories.
The hospital room she never described.
The night she disappeared.
Claire had spent years pretending her memory was gone.
Ruth had smuggled me away.
Then Victor discovered what she had done.
He threatened Ruth.
He forced her into hiding.
Claire survived by becoming invisible.
She recorded names.
Dates.
Payments.
Every piece of evidence.
Six months earlier, a new nurse had found the hidden notes.
She sent a photograph to Michael.
Victor found out.
He moved Claire again.
The winery.
The warehouse.
The final escape.
Vanessa sat on the dock under arrest.
“He told me Claire was dangerous.”
I looked at her.
“You believed him?”
Vanessa stared at the water.
“I knew you were innocent.”
That admission was worse than a lie.
“I knew you hadn't stolen anything.”
“Then why did you do it?”
“Because I thought no one would care.”
Police led her away.
Claire turned toward Margaret.
She had arrived at the dock.
Her expression hardened.
“You were there.”
Margaret stopped.
May you like
Claire's voice trembled.
“You watched them take me.”
