Chapter 17 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH We found Eleanor in a quiet coastal town.

She lived under another name.

She was reluctant to speak.

Then she saw Claire.

Her face changed.

“I thought you were dead.”

“So did everyone.”

Eleanor began crying.

She had helped Claire uncover the pension theft.

She had seen Charles threaten Victor.

She had watched them prepare the documents that erased Claire.

But she had not known about me.

Until Ruth told her.

Eleanor had kept one final ledger.

It contained every shell company.

Every payment.

Every official who had been bribed.

One name made Michael go pale.

A judge.

The same judge who had approved Claire's original death declaration.

But he was not retired.

He was now running for governor.

The Harrington scandal had not ended with Victor.

It had only reached the edge of something larger.

I asked Eleanor why she had stayed silent.

She looked at me.

“Because powerful people don't need to kill you.”

“They only need to convince everyone you're lying.”

I understood.

That was exactly what had happened to me.

The necklace had been a smaller version of the same weapon.

A lie placed where everyone could see it.

Eleanor handed me the ledger.

“There is one final account.”

“What account?”

“Charles called it the insurance account.”

“Who owned it?”

May you like

Eleanor looked toward Claire.

“Your mother.”
