Chapter 16 - THE LETTER RUTH NEVER SENT Months after the center opened, Claire began having nightmares.
She would wake before dawn.
Always the same words.

One morning, she found an old envelope hidden inside the lining of Ruth's suitcase.
Ruth had left it behind.
The letter was addressed to Claire.
But Ruth had never sent it.
Claire read it with shaking hands.
I found Emily.
She is safe.
But Victor knows.
I am taking her somewhere he cannot reach.
If I disappear, don't look for me.
Protect her.
Claire pressed the letter against her chest.
Then she noticed something else.
A date.
And a name.
Eleanor Price.
Michael recognized the name immediately.
A former Harrington accountant.
A woman who had vanished after testifying against Charles.
Reyes searched the archives.
Eleanor had never been declared dead.
She had simply disappeared.
And according to an old banking record, she had received one final payment from a Harrington account.
The payment had been made six months ago.
After Victor's arrest.
